Vermilion Township was named after the principal river emptying into the lake through its territory. Vermilion is bounded on the north by the City of Vermilion; south by Florence Township; east by Brownhelm Township, Lorain County; and west by Berlin Township. Per the 2010 census, there were 4,945 people who live in the unincorporated portion of Vermilion Township.
